How to care for massage table linens

5 Tips to Make Your Massage Table Sheets Last Looong

Massage sheets and are an integral part of a spa experience and as a therapist, you want your clients to feel relaxed and comfortable in freshly laundered sheets. But how do you keep your sheets fresh, clean and at the same time make them durable? This looks like a mammoth task especially when you are always doing a heap full of laundry each day, every day of the year. That’s like 250-365 wash cycles per sheet at the bare minimum.
Well, we got you covered.

Here are some tips and tricks that will help you care for your sheets and linens:

1. Thread Count Matters

It all starts with choosing the right massage sheets. We know there is a lot of buzz around thread count – which can get very confusing. Higher thread counts definitely feel soft but they aren’t strong enough to bear the high wash ratio of a spa. So let’s save those 500+ thread count sheets for home use. We recommend lower thread count massage sheets for your spa. They are light, easy to wash, feel smooth as well as accumulate less oil residue. We recommend BodyBest™ Percale Massage Table Sheets that are all 180 to 250 thread count.

Read our blog on how to choose massage table sheets for your clinic or spa.

2. Oil Oil Go Away

The biggest challenge for spa owners is taking that oil out of the sheets. Over time the oil residue builds up. Apart from choosing the right washing method, selecting the right cleaning products is also important. Pre-treating oil stains is an excellent idea as they break up oil and grease and work great on massage table sheets.

You can use Pure Pro Orange Linen Degreaser, Myo-Ther N-Zyme or use Eco-Max Natural Orange Concentrated Laundry Wash to degrease or deodorize your massage table sheets/linens.

Pro Tip: For the desired outcome of removing oil from your sheets and linens pre-treat them within 24 hours of an oil stain. If you are busy with your massage appointments, simply place the soiled linens in a black plastic bag and seal it. This will keep the sheets and linens away from fresh air and light. Air and light are known to deepen the stain and make it difficult to remove. We suggest a pretreatment enzyme stain remover such as  Myo-Ther N-Zyme.

3. Prevention is Always Better than Cure

If not always, prevention is at least better at most times. The best way to treat oil stains is to not use oils that stain. Switch to non-staining massage oils, lotions or gels. We highly recommend the following non staining massage lubricants:

Pro-Tip: We also recommend the use of disposable sheets on top of your sheets – especially for those heavy duty massages that involve a lot of sticky and greasy oils or gels. Try these disposable sheets from Body Best either absorbing or water resistant.

4. Wonderful Washing, No Fire Fighting

Choosing the right washing cycles is key to maintaining your sheets. Always wash your sheets and linens in lukewarm water. Avoid hot water as it will “cook” the oil into the sheets/linens, making the oil stick to the sheets. Over time, these sheets will become dense with oil residue and a real fire hazard for your dryer.

We recommend drying at a low to medium temperature (depending on the material of the sheet). High heat with oil residue in sheets is a major fire hazard. Remove the sheets as soon as they dry, to avoid wrinkles. If the oil stains are not completely removed, repeat the washing process for a second time. Always read your washing machine and dryer instructions before using.

5. Bye Bye Bleach

When washing your sheets, avoid using bleach all together. Bleach will damage the cotton fibres and over time you will get those pesky holes.

Go Organic: If you need to brighten your white sheets, here is an age-old trusted method – Add 1/2 cup of vinegar or 1/4 cup of lemon juice to your wash. Wash your sheets in warm water with a cold water rinse.

We recommend using a low heat setting and throwing in a few tennis or wool balls to reduce the drying time. Remove sheets/linens as soon as the dryer stops to avoid wrinkles.

Let’s massage and not worry about stains, holes, and fires.
