Accompanying its exceptionally well-informed text is a treasury of more than 700 illustrations: images of the past that are a substantial addition to the historical record.

Deepen your understanding and appreciation of massage therapy’s history and the forces that have shaped it, not only through its European heritage and the spirit and circumstances of the New World, but also those more recent global influences that have further enriched the profession.

Patricia J Benjamin, PhD is a licensed massage therapist, educator, and author who has been researching and writing about the history of massage therapy for three decades. She holds a doctoral degree from Purdue University in leisure studies with a concentration in historic preservation. After graduating from massage school in the early 1980s during a period of dynamic growth in the profession, she became intrigued by stories of its earlier days. She is a former AMTA National Historian and periodically writes about massage history in Massage Therapy Journal to enlighten and inspire with stories about the profession’s past. Her extensive collection of old books, devices, and other artifacts related to the profession, enhanced by invaluable sources now available on the Internet, have made this panoramic view of the history of the massage therapy profession in North America possible. Dr. Benjamin is also author of the entry-level text Tappan’s Handbook of Massage Therapy: Blending Art with Science, 6th edition..
