The Benefits of Clay and Mud Facial Masks

Just what are the benefits of clay and mud facial masks?

Clay and mud masks have been used for centuries to remove impurities from the skin and leave it looking clearer and healthier. They work by drawing impurities and toxins from deep underneath the skin to the skin's surface, and when the mask is rinsed off, so are all of these impurities that can lead to acne and other skin problems.

That's the theory, anyway. Whether or not this is medically proven, the application of fine mineral powders in mud form to the face has be practiced since time immemorial, and leaves the skin feeling clean, taut, and healthy. Moreover, the treatment feels amazing. It is as relaxing and therapeutic as many other treatments.

Other benefits of clay and mud facial masks are thought to include:

  • Unclog pores: Mud and clay masks may remove impurities from the skin, unclogging pores and absorbing excess oil.
  • Exfoliate: The minerals in the mud will exfoliate dead skin cells, dirt, oil, and other impurities, making skin appear cleaner, brighter, and less porous.
  • Control oil: Clay and mud masks can help reduce and absorb excess oil, which is great at helping to mattify acne/oily skin types and can also kick pore-clogging impurities to the curb via a deep and thorough cleanse.
  • Improve skin texture and tone: Clay and mud masks can help improve skin texture and tone by removing impurities and dead skin cells.
  • Prevent acne: Regular use of a mask can help prevent acne because it removes oil and impurities before they can cause blemishes.
  • Hydrate skin: Certain types of clays are great for hydrating dry skin. Clay masks can even hydrate your skin, which is essential if you’re dealing with dryness, since clay’s ability to absorb oil can actually exacerbate dryness.

Biotone European Rose Mud: This deeply hydrating creme-based mud contains natural sun-dried rose clay extracted from Provence, France. Alpha-hydroxy lactic acid, wheat amino acids, beta glucan, and Rosa centifolia are infused into the mud to accelerate cell renewal and moisturisation.

Clay vs Mud: What's the Difference?

The two terms clay and mud can be used pretty much interchangeably in the context of facial treatments. Perhaps clay refers to a purer form of soil material and mud maybe has a higher water content for spreadability. Both can be mixed blended with minerals, vitamins, essential oils, and other therapeutic ingredients.

Soil is a naturally occurring mixture of sand, silt, and clay particles — each being progressively finer in particle size. Clay particles are exceptionally minute and are able to coat and fill the finest pores of the skin.

There are several types of clay and mud masks available, each with its own unique properties and benefits. Here are some of the most common types:

Clay Masks

Bentonite clay: This type of clay is often used in formulas designed for oily and acne-prone skin. It helps tighten skin and also draws out impurities, including bacteria, to promote clear skin.

Kaolin clay: This is a mild clay that is suitable for all skin types. It helps absorb excess dirt and oil and clear acne.

French green clay: This type of clay is rich in minerals like silica, magnesium, and calcium. It is known for its ability to absorb excess oil, unclog pores, and remove impurities from the skin.

Mud Masks

Dead Sea mud: This type of mud is rich in minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium. It helps to detoxify and purify the skin by drawing out impurities, excess oil, and toxins.

Volcanic mud: This type of mud is rich in sulfur, which has antibacterial properties that can help fight acne. It also helps to exfoliate the skin and improve its texture.

Rhassoul clay: This type of mud is rich in minerals like silica, magnesium, and calcium. It helps to cleanse and purify the skin without causing dryness, making it suitable for normal, sensitive, or dry skin types.
